Locke LoL Guide: How to Play the Ashen Exorcist Mid Lane AP Assassin

Amber.gg 3 min read

Locke, the Ashen Exorcist, is officially here — League of Legends new mid lane AP assassin drops with Patch 26.13. Here is his full kit breakdown, best builds, rune paths, and how he reshapes the mid lane meta.

Locke is finally here: the Ashen Exorcist has arrived in Locke League of Legends build mid lane as a high-burst AP assassin. Released on June 9, 2026, he brings a nail-slinging exorcism fantasy to the rift.

Locke's Kit: Everything You Need to Know 🔩

Locke is a melee AP assassin built around stacking debuffs and executing low-health targets. Here's a breakdown of his full kit:

Passive, Silver Stake: Basic attacks deal bonus magic damage scaling with AP and the target's missing health, up to double damage on very low HP targets. This makes him deadly in duels once he gets an enemy below 30%.

Q, Ritual Nails: Locke hurls projectile nails that apply up to 3 stackable debuffs and slow enemies. At 2+ stacks, enhanced effects trigger on your next ability, creating a loop of poke and burst.

W, Soul Ignition: Grants attack speed and movement speed that decay over time. Bonus: damage you take converts into grey health, which you recover by dealing damage. Rewards aggressive trading patterns.

E, Ashen Pursuit: A blink that deals damage on arrival and empowers your next basic attack with extended range plus a directional dash. Critically, it resets on champion takedowns, making Locke a snowball machine once he gets his first kill.

R, Purgatory: Throws an artifact that creates a large AOE, applying marks and executing enemies below a health threshold. Successfully executed champions leave retrievable artifacts that reduce ability cooldowns. One ult can clear a whole teamfight if you hit the timing right.

Solo Queue Viability 🎯

Locke shines in solo queue for several reasons. His E dash resets on kills, meaning a fed Locke can chain takedowns across an entire fight. His passive makes him increasingly dangerous as enemies drop to low HP, exactly the kind of pressure that's hard to respect in a solo queue environment where coordination is limited.

However, he has a steep difficulty curve. Stacking Q debuffs on the right target while managing W's grey health window and hitting your E blink at the right moment requires precise sequencing. Expect to invest time in the champion before getting consistent results.

For build path, prioritize ability haste and AP to maximize Q stack damage and Purgatory cooldown resets. His kit is a natural fit for burst-first mage-assassin items.

Mid Lane Meta Impact

Locke joins a crowded AP assassin pool alongside Kassadin, Diana, and Akali in 2026's mid lane meta. What differentiates him is his AOE execute potential: unlike single-target assassins, a well-landed Purgatory can swing a team fight by generating cooldown resets.

He was previewed in patch 26.11 context and officially goes live in patch 26.12. If you followed our Locke dev update article, you already know Riot designed him to be mechanically expressive rather than stat-check-dominant, which is good for the meta's long-term health.

His biggest challenge will be the laning phase: as a melee champion in a meta with several poke-heavy mids, early trades can be rough. Respect the wave until level 3, then look for extended trades with your Q stacks.
