🧭 What losing the opener costs you
Champions Shanghai runs 24 September to 18 October with a $2,250,000 prize pool, and the group stage is a four-team double-elimination bracket. Every match is best-of-three.
That structure is why the opening results matter without being fatal. Lose your opener and you are not out, you are pushed into the elimination match, where a second loss ends your tournament. Win your opener and you play the winners' match, and its winner takes the group's top seed into the playoffs.
So the opening round did not eliminate anyone. It sorted the four groups into two different lanes. If you have run a double-elimination Amber.gg ladder, the feeling is familiar: lose early and your run gets longer, not shorter.

🇨🇳 Group C: G2 cruise, Paper Rex survive
G2 Esports made the cleaner statement. They took down TYLOO 2-0 on 24 September and never looked like the team that had to qualify through Championship Points.
Paper Rex had the harder night. Team Liquid took a map off them before PRX closed it out 2-1, which is the kind of opener that tells you a Pacific favourite is beatable on the day but still finds a way.
The consequence lands on 29 September, when G2 Esports face Paper Rex in the winners' match. The loser does not leave Shanghai, but they drop into the decider path with a loss already on the record.
For TYLOO and Team Liquid, the margin is gone. Their 2-0 and 1-2 losses sent both straight into the elimination match on 1 October, and one of them leaves Shanghai without a single series win.

🇺🇸 Group D: NRG open the title defence, KC sweep XLG
The defending champions did not waste time. NRG beat Nongshim RedForce 2-0 on 25 September, taking the maps 13-5 and 13-10, and reminded everyone why the group was called the hardest draw of the stage. NRG won the 2025 world title, and Brock "brawk" Somerhalder was the Grand Final MVP of that run.
brawk's read afterwards was blunt about the preparation. NRG bootcamped in Taiwan against APAC teams, and it showed: "They're just super aggressive, and we were ready to shut it down."
He was just as direct about the rest of the group. KC and Xi Lai Gaming, he said, share a style: "KC is like one of the most aggressive EMEA teams. Usually EMEA teams play really slow. They play more like us, kind of, but KC is just way more aggressive, just like XLG."
Karmine Corp backed that up with a 2-0 sweep of Xi Lai Gaming, so on 29 September the winners' match is Karmine Corp vs NRG, an EMEA aggression test against the team that feeds on exactly that. The losers meet in the elimination match on 1 October: Nongshim RedForce vs Xi Lai Gaming, Masters Santiago winners against a Chinese side that has not found a map yet.
📅 What is set, and what is not
Two groups at VALORANT Champions Shanghai have decided their next matches. Two have not played a single map.

Elimination matches set:
- Team Liquid vs TYLOO, Group C, 1 October
- Nongshim RedForce vs Xi Lai Gaming, Group D, 1 October
Still to play, Group B openers on 26 September: Global Esports vs Team Vitality, then LOUD vs EDWARD Gaming. Group A openers on 27 September: 100 Thieves vs T1, then JD Gaming vs FUT Esports. Until those four series land, half the bracket is still a guess, and anyone writing a full playoff picture right now is filling in blanks.
