The group stage at VALORANT Champions Shanghai sits between rounds, and the regional split is not subtle. The four VCT China teams lost their opening series 0-2 and did not take a single map between them. The four VCT Americas teams won all four of theirs 2-0.
Two streaks rather than one duel: half of those Chinese defeats came from EMEA teams, and half of the Americas wins came against the Pacific. The first round of groups closed on JD Gaming's 0-2 against FUT Esports, which makes this the right moment to read the bracket instead of the box scores.

Stack the four Chinese openers next to each other and the shape is ugly. EDward Gaming, the side most people pencilled in as the region's best hope, got closest to a map and still finished 0-2.

🧭 What a 0-2 opener does to your bracket
VALORANT Champions Shanghai runs from 24 September to 18 October, and the group stage is a four-team double-elimination bracket with every series best-of-three. That structure is the reason 0-8 reads as brutal rather than fatal.
Lose your opener and you drop into the elimination match, where a second loss ends your run in Shanghai. Win that one and you play the winners' match instead, where a single victory locks in a direct playoffs spot rather than another lower-bracket climb.
So the opening round eliminated nobody. It sorted eight teams into two opposite lanes, and the next round is where the sorting becomes real.

😌 One win from playoffs, 😬 one loss from the airport
Four teams are a single series away from the playoffs bracket. Four are a single series away from going home.
One win from playoffs:
- 100 Thieves (Group A): the VCT Americas Stage 2 title run is still feeding this team, and the sweep of T1 did not need a third map.
- LOUD (Group B): closed out EDward Gaming 13-5 on Summit without ever looking rushed.
- G2 Esports (Group C): the cleanest opener of the four, 13-6 and 13-3.
- NRG (Group D): the defending champions, and the only side here that opened against a Masters winner.
In elimination already:
- TYLOO (Group C): nine rounds across two maps. Nothing to build on yet.
- XLG Esports (Group D): a first Champions appearance, and Karmine Corp gave it no room to settle.
- EDward Gaming (Group B): best of the four Chinese sides at 13-26, which is a low bar and still the region's clearest hope.
- JD Gaming (Group A): 11-26 against FUT Esports, with T1 waiting in the elimination match.
XLG and EDG both came through the China qualifier to reach Masters London this year, so this is not a roster that forgot how to win series. It is a region that ran into four teams playing at their ceiling in the same week (the Masters London qualifier run).
🇺🇸 Why the Americas 4-0 spreads across all four groups
The Americas run is not one lucky draw. 100 Thieves sit in Group A, LOUD in Group B, G2 Esports in Group C and NRG in Group D: four groups, four separate paths, four 2-0 series.
That is what makes the 4-0 worth more than the record itself. Each of those teams plays a winners' match where one win books playoffs directly, so four different Americas rosters can close out a top-eight spot without touching the lower bracket. The region also already proved it can beat itself at the highest level, with an all-Americas Grand Final at the Esports World Cup earlier this year (100 Thieves vs NRG in that final).
And it is not a China-only story. Team Vitality beat Global Esports 2-1 on 26 September, the Pacific's first seed falling to EMEA's last seed in the same round. The regional lines are being redrawn from both ends.

The winners' matches carry the biggest swing. G2 Esports vs Paper Rex and Karmine Corp vs NRG decide who skips the lower bracket entirely, and Paper Rex arrive as the team that has owned the Pacific all year (four Pacific titles in a row).
The elimination matches carry the blood. If VCT China loses two of its four, the host region is down to two teams before the playoffs even start. If EDward Gaming and JD Gaming convert theirs, the 0-8 becomes a footnote instead of a verdict.
