How the Splash mini game plays

Splash is the most painterly mode in our mini games gallery and the most fun mini game to play with someone watching over your shoulder.

  • Tight crop opens each puzzle

Today's puzzle drops on a 5x crop of an official champion splash. You can barely see what you are looking at, and that mystery is half the casual appeal of the mini game. Every wrong guess zooms out a notch.

  • Six attempts, six zoom levels

You get six tries before the mini game locks until the next refresh. Each miss reveals more canvas, ending around 1.5x where the splash is almost legible. The arcade rhythm is unmistakable: tight start, generous finish.

  • Skin splashes count as the base

Sometimes today is base Garen, sometimes it is Pulsefire Caitlyn. Either way the answer is the underlying champion, never the skin. The mini game is testing roster reading, not skin recognition, even when the skin is what you see.

  • Daily refresh at midnight UTC

A new splash drops each day and yesterday's reveal is published in full. The mini game rewards a casual eye for art, signature weapons, hairstyles, palettes, and lighting, the fingerprints of every champion on the roster.

Quick tips for the splash mini game

Casual splash players spend their early zooms buying information, not chasing answers.

  1. Skip the gut guess on the first zoom. Unless a unique cue jumps out (Ahri's tails, Jhin's mask, Riven's broken blade), let the second zoom give you more canvas. Burning attempt one is the most common reason a casual run ends early.

  2. Read the regional palette before the figure. Demacia is gold and royal blue, Noxus is red and black with iron, Shadow Isles is teal and rotting black, Ionia leans pastel blues and pinks, Freljord is ice blue and pelt, Shurima is desaturated gold and sand.

  3. Anchor on iconic crops the gallery always rewards. Wide gauntlet on a sword is Garen. Orange tails on motion lines are Ahri. Blue blade and red bandana is Yasuo. Purple fairy on a yordle's shoulder is Lulu and Pix. Sniper-rifle visor is Caitlyn.

  4. Read the champion under the skin. Pulsefire, Project, Star Guardian, and DJ skin lines all have signature aesthetics borrowed from the line, not the champion. Identify by hat, weapon, or pose, never by colors that swap with each skin.

  5. Save the final two zoom levels for the face window. By 1.7x and 1.5x you can usually see the full silhouette or the face. Casual runs almost never lose at the last two frames, so your real budget is the first four guesses.
