The Valorant esports community is in mourning. Tyler "sym" Porter, a 21-year-old North American Challengers player, passed away on May 5, 2026, in a car accident. He died alongside his close friend Austen "Yuno" Reed, while celebrating his 21st birthday trip. The news has sent shockwaves through the competitive scene and beyond.
sym began his competitive journey in 2020, working his way through the North American Challengers circuit from the ground up. He suited up for Nearest Airport and TSM Academy before joining Moist Moguls for the 2023 season, then competing under the TSM BackOutsideBoys banner in 2024. Most recently, he served as a stand-in for Winthrop University in 2026.
At just 21, sym had years of competitive potential still ahead of him. Those who played alongside him described a player who was not only mechanically sharp but deeply invested in the growth of everyone around him.
The defining moment of sym's career came in 2024, when he helped TSM qualify for and reach the VCT Ascension tournament in Monterrey, Mexico. The team finished 6th, competing against the best Challengers rosters from across the Americas. For a player who had built his career from the bottom up, reaching Ascension was a genuine achievement, earned through consistent grind and team-first mentality.
North America's Challengers League is one of the most competitive rungs in the Valorant ecosystem. Getting all the way to Ascension was no small feat, and sym played his part in making it happen. TSM
TSM released an official statement following the news:
"From elevating our Academy program to helping us reach Ascension on the main roster, you left your mark. You had so much ahead of you, and we'll miss you dearly."
Former teammate Anthony "gMd" Guimond spoke about what sym meant to him on a personal level: "Tyler was one of my best friends. We talked about everything, he'd call me for advice. One of the best kids ever." The weight behind those words speaks to the kind of person sym was, far beyond the server.
The VLR.gg thread flooded with responses from players, fans, and organizations, all mourning the loss of someone whose positive energy had made an impression on everyone he encountered.
At 21, Tyler Porter had barely begun to show what he was capable of. His path from open circuit to Ascension was a story of grit, consistency, and genuine love for the game. Whether he was clutching in a match or being a pillar for his teammates off the server, sym left his mark on those who knew him.
To his family, friends, and former teammates: the Valorant community stands with you.
