Riot is overhauling how ranked works in 2026, and the LoL ranked 2026 changes hit the parts players complain about most: autofill, dodging penalties, duo queue restrictions, and Flex rank inflation. Here is what is changing, who it affects, and what it means for your climb.
Getting autofilled into a role you don't play and then losing LP for it is one of the most frustrating experiences in ranked. Riot's fix is Aegis of Valor.
When you are autofilled, you now get a choice on the result: win and earn double LP, or lose and take zero LP loss — as long as you finish the game with a mastery score of C or better. Play decently in a role that isn't yours and the system protects you.
This matters because it removes the silent LP tax that autofill used to carry. Before, a forced role meant a coin-flip where heads you gained normal LP and tails you lost normal LP. Aegis flips the EV in your favor.
There is one wrinkle: support and jungle mains who queued into their primary role also receive Aegis rewards "at roughly the same cadence" as autofilled players — but without any lobby notification. Riot is using this to keep matchmaking fair for both sides. The system also now tries to pair autofilled players against each other in the same position first. If that is not possible, teams get equal autofill counts. If that still fails, the team with more autofills gets higher MMR compensation.

Dodging to avoid a bad lobby has always had a cost. In 2026, that cost gets significantly higher at the top of the ladder.
At Master tier and above: a single dodge is now treated as a full loss. You eat the LP penalty, your autofill status carries over to the next game (no reset), and you receive a dodge cooldown timer on top. Three separate punishments for one dodge.
Below Master: the change is smaller. Autofill no longer resets when you dodge — that carryover applies to all ranks. But there is no LP loss from dodging outside of Master+.
The reasoning is straightforward. High-elo players were using dodging as a tool to manage their autofill queue and manipulate LP swings. Riot decided the tradeoff was too exploitable at the top, so they made the pain commensurate with the gain.

Duo queue had been restricted at the top of the ladder for years due to boosting concerns. In 2026 it comes back at all ranks, including Challenger.
Riot's stated reasoning: "The risk is lower. With recent boosting detection and matchmaking improvements, we're confident it can return." The detection systems have improved to the point where the restriction is no longer worth the frustration it causes for legitimate duo partners.

Flex queue has always had a messy relationship with Solo/Duo rank. Players could perform well in Flex and watch their Solo rank edge upward even without the wins to back it up. That stops in 2026.
The new hard constraint: Flex will never pull your Solo MMR or rank upward. They can diverge — you can be a different rank in each — but Flex cannot artificially inflate where you start in Solo/Duo.
The goal is cleaner brackets. Fewer situations where a Diamond Flex player queues into Platinum Solo/Duo lobbies and wonders how they got there. Matches in both queues should now reflect actual performance in that specific mode.
Combined with the solo queue frustrations that surface in LoL's competitive structure, this is one of the more structural fixes Riot has shipped in years.
Champion select timers — reduced by roughly 30 seconds — rolled out with Patch 26.1 and are now live worldwide. The broader ranked changes (Aegis of Valor, dodging penalties, duo queue, Flex alignment) are launching for the 2026 season. Specific patch numbers were not confirmed for all features at the time of the announcement.
Allied champion banning in champ select has also been removed — you can no longer ban a teammate's hovered pick. Small change, real QoL improvement.
