LoL Patch 26.20 Preview: Buffs, Nerfs and Items
The last balance patch before Worlds 2026 lands October 7: 11 champion buffs, 5 nerfs and three item changes to plan around this week.
LoL patch 26.20 lands on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, and it is the last balance patch before Worlds 2026 starts on October 15. That leaves you one clean week to fix your champion pool before everyone else reads the same notes.
This is not a patch notes recap. It is what changes in your ranked queue: which champions become real picks, which ones to drop, and why three item changes matter more than half the champion list. Every number below comes from Riot's preview, so treat it as provisional until the patch ships.
π― Key takeaways before you queue
- Buffs: 11 champions, led by Vayne, Lillia, Diana and Smolder.
- Nerfs: 5 champions, with Ashe and Yunara hit as a pair.
- Items: Experimental Hexplate and Runaan's Hurricane nerfed, Rocketbelt reworked toward burst.
- Pulled: Varus and Sylas are out of the patch.
- Timing: it drops October 7, eight days before Worlds 2026 opens on October 15.
β‘ Buffs: the 11 champions Riot wants back in the pool
The buff list is mostly targeted repairs: champions that fell off after earlier changes, plus a few that need help at higher skill levels.
Buffs:
- Diana: W Pale Cascade shield bonus health ratio 11% to 14%. Aimed at her jungle bruiser build, not mid.
- Kennen: E Lightning Rush bonus attack speed 40-80% to 50-90%.
- Kindred: E Mounting Dread no longer targets small monsters and its slow goes from 1s to 1.5s, while W Wolf's Frenzy monster modifier goes from 150% to 165%.
- Lillia: R Lilting Lullaby sleep duration 2.5s to 2.5/2.75/3s.
- Lucian: attack damage per level 2.5 to 2.9.
- Mordekaiser: R Realm of Death cooldown 140/120/100s to 120/110/100s, and Q Obliterate scaling from levels 10-20 goes from +5 to +7 per level.
- Neeko: E Tangle-Barbs base damage 70-210 (+65% AP) to 80-220 (+65% AP), empowered root 1.8-3s to 2-3s.
- Smolder: passive Dragon Practice Super Scorcher Breath 25-55% (+0-9% with IE) to 25-60% (+0-10.5% with IE), Flap Flap Flap 8-12.8% (+1.44% with IE) to 8-14% (+1.8% with IE), and R self-heal 100-170 (+50% bonus AD)(+75% AP) to 100-250 (+75% bonus AD)(+75% AP).
- Tahm Kench: Q Tongue Lash base healing 10-25 to 10-50.
- Vayne: health regeneration 4 + 0.5 per level to 5.5 + 0.4 per level, and Q Tumble mana cost 46-30 to 30.
- Swain: base magic resist 31 to 34, base armor 25 to 23, W Vision of Empire damage 70-210 (+60% AP) to 70-250 (+60% AP) and cooldown 22-18s to 20-16s.

Vayne is the one to watch. Riot is buffing her bot lane on purpose, because the Hexplate nerf removes her most abusive top lane build. If she is already in your pool, this is the patch where she stops being a top lane gimmick and plays like a normal marksman again.
Lillia and Diana follow the same logic at different ends of the skill curve. Lillia's longer sleep is worth far more to coordinated players than to the average one, which is exactly the gap Riot says it is trying to close. Diana's shield ratio only scales with bonus health, so it lands on the jungle build and leaves mid alone.
π Nerfs: five picks on the way down
LoL patch 26.20 takes power away from five champions you have probably been leaning on.
Nerfs:
- Ambessa: passive Drakehound's Step damage 5-30 (+25% bonus AD) to 5-25 (+20% bonus AD).
- Ashe: attack damage growth 3.5 to 3 per level.
- Cassiopeia: base health 630 to 610 and base mana 480 to 450.
- K'Sante: W Path Maker mana cost 40-60 to 45-65, and damage reduction 30/75% to 25/70%.
- Yunara: Q Cultivation of Spirit on-hit 5-25 (+20% AP) to 3-23 (+20% AP) on both the passive and the active, plus a bugfix so W and ultimate W slows no longer stack with other slows.

Ashe and Yunara are a package deal. Riot says their pairing is still one of the strongest bot lanes even after the Hurricane nerf, because plenty of Ashe builds skip Hurricane entirely. Yunara's level 1 laning was simply too strong for a champion who scales that well, so the cut lands on her early trades instead of her late game.
π§° Systems: the three items that matter more than the champions
If you play a mage or a marksman, this is the part of LoL patch 26.20 to read twice.
Systems:
- Experimental Hexplate (ranged modifier): 70% of value (35% attack speed, 14% move speed) to 50% (25% attack speed, 10% move speed).
- Runaan's Hurricane: attack damage per bolt 65% to 60%.
- Rocketbelt: ability haste 20 to 10, active damage 100 (+10% AP) to 135 (+15% AP).
Hexplate is the reason Vayne gets buffed at all, and it quietly ends the ranged top lane builds that leaned on it. Rocketbelt is the more interesting change: Riot is trading repeatability for a harder engage, because the haste was making mages too durable and too flexible. Less spam, more burst.
π« What Riot pulled: Varus and Sylas
Two changes were cut before the patch went out. Varus needs larger work on his builds to feel satisfying, and Sylas cannot be adjusted without breaking the balance between his roles, especially in a patch that also moves Rocketbelt.
If you saw a Sylas buff listed somewhere, that was a preview that did not survive the final cut. The final list is the one to trust.
π§ How to play the week before October 7
- Bot lane: test Vayne now. The Hexplate nerf lands first, the buff lands with it.
- Jungle: Diana and Kindred both get cleaner. Kindred's E change alone makes her clears less awkward.
- Mid: Swain is the quiet winner. More magic resist, less armor, and a faster W that lands more often.
- Mages: if Rocketbelt was your crutch, the haste cut hurts. Try a second item before you decide.
