LoL Patch 26.16 Preview: ADC Buffs Before the Wednesday Drop

Amber.gg 4 min read

Patch 26.16 drops Wednesday, August 12, with the first real ADC relief since Season 3 launched. All 28 marksmen get +3 base magic resist, three core items get upgraded, and support roaming becomes significantly more punishing. Here's every change that matters for your bot lane games before Wednesday.

Patch 26.16 drops Wednesday, August 12, and it's the first patch since Season 3 launched that actually addresses why bot lane has felt rough 📉. Marksmen get a system-wide magic resist bump, key items get upgraded, and support roaming gets punished harder. Here's what to know before the meta shifts on Wednesday.

🧙 Why Mages Dominated Bot Lane

The mage support problem started the moment Season 3 launched with Patch 26.15 on July 29. Brand, Swain, Ziggs, Veigar, and Seraphine spiked in priority, and the reason is simple: ADCs couldn't survive the early magic damage.

Mages deal front-loaded burst that kills marksmen in the first few levels, before ADCs can build into any defensive stats. Riot's Lead Gameplay Designer Phroxzon confirmed this is the target: not mage damage at full build, but the laning phase gap specifically. Patch 26.16 is aimed exactly at that window.

🛡️ System-Wide ADC Magic Resist Buff

All 28 marksmen get a base MR increase from 30 to 33. To offset this at later levels, MR growth per level drops from 1.3 to 1.1.

The change is surgical: ADCs become noticeably tougher against magic poke in levels 1-9, but the gap closes as the game goes later. Riot isn't nerfing mage damage at full build, they're giving ADC players a real shot at surviving lane phase. Affected champions include Kai'Sa, Caitlyn, Zeri, Jinx, Ezreal, Ashe, Draven, Aphelios, Samira, Smolder, and 18 others.

⚔️ Item Buffs That Compound the Change

Three items hit alongside the MR buff, and they're all bot-lane facing:

  • Berserker's Greaves: Attack speed 25% → 30% — better early ramp for auto-reliant carries
  • Runaan's Hurricane: Bolt damage 55% → 65% AD, plus a new movement speed component, direct teamfight upgrade
  • Fleet Footwork: Base heal 10-130 → 15-160 — meaningful sustain improvement on every proc

The Heal summoner spell also gets buffed (exact numbers not confirmed yet). The direction is clear: Riot wants early 2v2 bot lane skirmishes to feel competitive again, not a one-sided magic damage lottery.

Caitlyn, safest ADC pick in the mage support meta before Patch 26.16.

💰 Support Gold Penalty: Roaming Gets Expensive

The anti-roam system tightens significantly in Patch 26.16:

  • Out-of-lane penalty: 25% until level 3 → 33% until level 5

A support who roams early without securing kills or objectives will fall noticeably behind. This directly targets the mage support habit of abandoning lane pre-level 3 to set up kills across the map, a pattern that was sidestepping the penalty system.

Camille support gets targeted nerfs on top of this: longer cooldowns on Passive and E, reduced outer-edge damage on W, with a base mana increase as compensation. She's been one of the dominant roaming bullies since Season 3 started, and this is a direct answer 📌.

🎯 What to Play Before Wednesday (and After)

The mage meta isn't going anywhere until August 12. Your best plays this week are ADCs with built-in tools to avoid trades rather than tank through them:

  • Caitlyn — range keeps mage poke out of kill range; the safest ADC laner right now
  • Ezreal — E gets him out of kill combos; still very playable with good positioning

After the patch, the item buffs shift the calculus:

  • Kai'Sa — already S-tier in the current Season 3 tier list, the +3 base MR lets her survive the early Brand and Swain trades she previously couldn't. Top pick for 26.16.
  • Zeri — Fleet Footwork is her core rune, and the heal scaling increase directly improves her laning sustain. Runaan's bolt damage buff maps onto her multi-target kit perfectly.
